How I Take Photos from a Plane | Abstract Aerial Photography

For our final days of our Kimberley trip, we drove out to the creeks near Broome for sunrise. We then headed to the airport for our aerial photography flight to capture the views from above of the coast up to Derby.

The basic plan was to fly up the west side of the peninsular and then east to Derby which would take us over Pender Bay. While there were some locations we wanted to check out on our way up, we wanted to spend the majority of our time explore the coffee tones of the sand banks in Pender Bay.

I took two cameras up with me, the Nikon Z7 with the 14-30mm lens and the D850 with the 70-200mm. In the end I used the D850 more because of the height at which we were flying. I was setting both the Aperture and Shutter Speed manually. Typically the Aperture was at the widest f/4 on the Z7 and f/2.8 on the D850. Depending on the light available I had the shutter speed between 1/1250 and 1/1600 of a sec allowing for the speed the plane was travelling and the shake created by the air blowing into the plane with the windows up. I've included my camera settings with each image I share in the video.

I had the ISO set to auto, limited to the range of 64 to 500. I also had continuous shooting mode set on each camera, so I could compose up each shot and keep my finger pressed on the shutter button and the camera would fire off a series of shots. In the end I took about 1000 on the Z7 and 4000 on the D850.
