Starship's Launch Damage is Worse Than You Think... Stage 0 Destroyed!

In today's video, we're going to discuss the recent SpaceX Starship's debut launch that caused significant damage to its pad at the Starbase facility in Boca Chica. Don't forget to hit that like button and subscribe to our channel for more exciting space content. Now, let's dive into the story!
On April 20, SpaceX's Starship conducted its first-ever fully stacked test flight, reaching a maximum altitude of 24 miles before an uncontrollable tumble forced its destruction. When the dust settled after liftoff, a scene of wreckage emerged: Starship's 33 first-stage Raptor engines blew out a crater beneath the orbital launch mount, pummeling nearby infrastructure with flying chunks of cement and other debris.
Footage from the scene, captured by LabPadre's VR camera, showed the aftermath of the launch near the launch and catch tower. This was the first time Starship had attempted such a powerful launch, with 30 of the 33 Raptor engines firing at full capacity, generating an impressive 16.5 million pounds of thrust.
SpaceX Starbase's orbital launch mount does not have a flame trench, a structure designed to deflect plume exhaust away from the pad during liftoff. Flame trenches are common features of pads hosting powerful rockets, such as NASA's Space Launch System or SLS megarocket, which recently launched from Kennedy Space Center's Pad 39B. SLS's first flight endured 8.8 million pounds of thrust, and while hardware at the pad suffered some damage, it mostly withstood the force.
In contrast, Starship's first-stage Raptors produce about 16.5 million pounds of thrust when firing at full capacity. SpaceX had considered digging a flame trench at Starbase but ultimately decided against it. Musk stated in October 2020, "Aspiring to have no flame diverter in Boca, but this could turn out to be a mistake." This decision might have contributed to the significant damage the pad experienced during the recent launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of drone photography?

Drone photography is a great way to capture images as well as video. You should be aware of the potential downsides of flying a small aircraft.

Drone flying is expensive. It could cost you hundreds, or even thousands of dollars depending on the drone that you buy.

A drone pilot must be trained and certified. This means that you will need to invest your time and money in order to learn how to safely fly them.

Safety is another concern. Drones pose a danger because they are constantly in need of repair and maintenance. If you lose control of your drone while taking photos or filming videos, it could cause serious property damage or injure someone.

You might find that you spend more time operating a drone than actually capturing photographs or recording footage. You may also have restricted airspace in which you can fly your drone.

You can only fly your unmanned air vehicle within certain areas. You can't fly over 400 feet or within 5 miles of stadiums or hospitals, schools, prisons or other military bases, as well as nuclear power plants and dams.

Drones aren’t for everyone. People feel nervous about flying drones because they fear that they will crash into the ground or fall from the sky. Some people worry about accidentally hitting another person or object.

If you're not comfortable flying a drone, then maybe you should stick to traditional aerial photography and videography methods instead.

What should I know about the laws regarding drone photography?

Drone flights can be regulated by Federal Aviation Administration. Local laws might also apply to drone flight operations. For information on drone flying regulations in your state, contact the transportation department.

Most drone owners will need to apply for a FAA licence. The FAA has guidelines for licensing. These guidelines are available here.

In some states, drone operators must register their drones with the government. Learn more about drone registration in our Guide to Drone Registration.

How do you fly your drone?

The best way to learn how to fly a drone is by practicing. Drones are more stable than regular aircraft but it takes practice to become proficient. Practice indoors or at home is the best option for beginners.

When learning how to fly a drone, you'll need to master three basic skills. These are hovering, landing, and taking off.

Taking Off

You simply lift the drone up into the air by taking off. To do this, press the button on the controller until the drone starts moving upward. Once the drone reaches a certain height, stop pushing the button.

Hovering

Hovering is when the drone stays in midair. To hover, press and hold the left or the right triggers. By holding down both triggers, you can tilt the drone to move it.

Landing

Landing is returning the drone safely back to earth. To land, let go of the throttle and gently tilt the controller towards the ground. This will cause the drone to slow down and eventually land.

Fly your drone as comfortable as possible. However, be careful not crash into anything.

How much money do drone photographers make?

A photographer could make more or less than $10k depending upon how long he/she is flying for and where he/she takes photos. For those who shoot in remote locations such as forests and national parks, the hourly rate could be between $20-30.

The average person earns between $15-$25 an hour working in retail, which means you could earn $50-$75 flying drones if you wanted to. There are still many ways to make even more. Drone pilots often fly for companies that require them cross-country or international travel.

Depending on how long you fly and how far you travel, you can expect to pay $100-$300 per flight. You might find it worthwhile if flying is something you enjoy and you also love taking photos.

What is the best drone for photography?

Drones are a fascinating technology that can be used in many ways. They can be used to take aerial photos, make movies, or even deliver packages. But what makes drones such useful tool? Drones have two main advantages. Firstly, they are incredibly versatile tools. There are thousands of uses for drones. Drones can be used to perform almost every type of task that a camera is capable of. They are also very simple to operate. If you have flown a quadcopter before, you already know how simple it is to fly a drone.

Drones are also great because they can capture amazing images. A drone can easily capture stunning photos of places you wouldn't usually go. These include remote areas in which you could be put in danger.

Drones have a simple operation, so anyone can fly them. Once you know the basics, you can fly your drone anywhere and shoot amazing photos. Check out our drone collection if you want to take better photographs.

How To

What is the distance a drone can fly at?

When a drone becomes part of you, it is considered a good distance. It is possible to lose sight physical boundaries of the drone if you begin to view it as a separate entity.

For drones, a good distance allows you to fully immerse your self in the environment without having to worry about where the drone is going next.

The psychological benefit of flying close to ground is also evident. Flying close to the ground gives you a greater sense of control and makes it easier to feel connected to nature.

There is however a downside. We are more likely to get wind and weather conditions from flying close to the ground than we are from flying further away. This could cause damage to the drone. How far from the ground can you fly?

The answer depends on the type of drone you are flying. It is a good idea to maintain a minimum of 500 feet above the ground when you are trying to capture aerial footage.

You might choose to film a cityscape at 1,000 feet, for instance. By doing this, you can avoid any obstructions such as trees or buildings.

Drones are more sensitive to low-light conditions. To reduce hovering time when flying in the darkness, lower the altitude.

Make sure there are no obstructions like power lines, traffic signs, tall buildings, etc.

Consider flying during daylight hours instead of at night. This allows you to avoid reflections due to street lights or shadows.

Another thing to think about is the size of the drone itself. The drone must be at least 300 feet from the ground, so the larger it is, the more space it will need. A large quadcopter for example requires a height of at least 300 feet.

You should never miss the golden hour if you are looking for great drone footage.

This is the period between 3 pm and 6 pm. Direct overhead sunlight gives you maximum visibility during this time.

It's also known to be the "magic hour," and is ideal for capturing beautiful images.

However, you should avoid flying your drone at sunset and sunrise. These times can result in poor quality footage.

Now that you've got all these tips, it's time to start creating amazing drone videos.
