Talking Landscape Photography: Episode 109
Topic: Antarctica
Show Date: LIVE on Wednesday, June 14th at 7:30pm AEST
Hosts: Luke Tscharke and Benjamin Maze

This week we have an extraordinary episode covering two different but equally remarkable journeys to the great southern continent of Antarctica.

The episode will start with a unique presentation of aerial images captured by Ben Maze. Ben joined a Chimu Adventures scenic flight over Antarctica last year and was lucky to have excellent visibility, circling the Trans-Antarctic Mountains for several hours. Ben will take us through what it's like to photograph such an expansive landscape from the air and talk us through his truly captivating series of images.

Once we have been treated to viewing Antarctica from the air, we will take in a lower perspective from the sea and land with Luke Tscharke. Luke was fortunate to make 3 consecutive expeditions to Antarctica at the beginning of the year with Intrepid Polar completing the infamous "Drake shake" passage crossing six times. Some of the highlights of his four weeks onboard the Ocean Endeavour included seeing the midnight sun south of the Antarctic Circle, a polar plunge in ice-cold water, and many encounters with Antarctic wildlife including penguins, leopard seals, humpback whales and orcas.

Luke will take us through what it's like to be on an Antarctic expedition with Intrepid, provide some tips on photographing in Antarctica, and of course take us through some of the 35k colour and infra-red images he captured during his 4 weeks down there, most of which have not been shown before.

Tune in and be amazed by the incredible landscapes and wildlife of Antarctica. The show will be broadcast LIVE on Wednesday 14th June at 7:30 pm AEST.

See you then,

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to capture drone photography?

Drone photography involves more than simply flying a camera. There are a lot of things you need to consider when planning and executing an effective drone shoot. It all starts with choosing the right place and determining how much insurance is required to make an aerial shoot a success.

It is essential to make sure you have permission to fly drones within the area you are planning to shoot. This means finding out whether there are any restrictions on where you can fly and where you can operate your drone. If there are, you might have to apply for a permit to fly them in the area.

It is also important to verify the laws in your country. Some countries require permits to fly drones, while others limit the number of flights you can make within a set period.

Not only will you need permission to fly drones but also where to safely land your drone after each flight. Local businesses will often offer landing pads for rent at a nominal fee. They also provide storage space and an hourly rate. A dedicated landing pad can also be purchased.

Before you begin shooting, you must decide on the type of drone you want. There are many drones with different capabilities and features. Fixed-wing drones, for example, are less expensive and more controllable, while multirotor drones, on the other hand, are more powerful and stable.

You'll first need to decide what kind of drone to use. Next, you will need to select the equipment that you will require. The equipment required to operate a drone camera includes a remote controller and gimbal as well as batteries and memory cards.

The gimbal helps stabilize the camera in flight. It makes it simple to take sharp images and not worry about losing the device. The drone's gimbal is attached directly to its body to help keep it steady.

Remote controllers allow you to control your drone from anywhere. These remote controllers include joysticks or buttons that allow you to move your drone forwards, backwards, left, right, and adjust its altitude.

The drone's motors, cameras and memory cards power their batteries. They also store the photos that the drone has taken. In order to ensure clear shots, ensure you have enough battery life.

After selecting the equipment you will require, you will need to determine where you will be shooting. Is it indoors or outdoor? Are you going to be shooting landscapes or architecture? What kind of places are you going to be shooting? All of these factors impact how you should prepare for your shoot.

Lighting is an essential part of indoor photography. Multiple lights will help lighten a room. Place one large light near the subject, another near it, and yet another close to the floor.

Outdoors, you'll need to consider wind conditions. Windy days can cause problems for drone pilots because they can get blown off course. Therefore, you should only take off when the weather is calm.

Think about whether extra equipment is needed when choosing your location. These items will allow you to keep your drone level so that you don't lose high-quality shots.

Outdoor shoots can be done between 10 AM and 4 PM. Although there won’t be as many people around at this time, it will still provide enough light for stunning photos.

A drone photographer is not just fun. They are also extremely useful for creating stunning aerial photos. You can create amazing images by following a few simple steps.

Which drone can you use for aerial photography?

You have two choices if your goal is to fly. You can either rent or buy a large camera package that includes a stabilizer and gimbal, or you could purchase a more expensive camera package.

The first option is great if you plan to shoot a video or film because it gives you complete control over how the shots look. You'll need to pay more, and you will be more dependent upon the pilot.

But what if you want to make sure the shot looks great even though you're not controlling the camera? Drones are the answer.

A drone, a small flying aircraft, can take photos and video by itself without having to be controlled by an operator.

They are extremely versatile and can fly very close to buildings to capture images and record footage. They can also fly low to capture photos of people.

Drones are incredibly useful for aerial photography and videography. They're also great marketing tools because you can create amazing visuals without having to use a lot of equipment and manpower.

These can be easily placed in strategic areas to capture breathtaking imagery. They can be flown remotely which makes them simple to operate.

For example, some companies hire drones for weddings. These wedding photographers can take amazing photos of the bride and groom while their drones fly above the ceremony location.

They can also fly them directly to the guests to capture family portraits. To capture breathtaking views of the venue, they can fly them through reception areas.

These activities are great for event coverage or promotional material. Drones are also great for making short films. One could be used to demonstrate to clients that your company is superior.

Drones are increasingly becoming popular for aerial photography and videography. A drone may be the perfect tool for professional photographers.

Can drone photography make you money?

Photographers trying to make a living from drones face the greatest problem: there aren’t many products available that can solve the problems of flying them. The experience is less enjoyable if there's no quality software and equipment.

You also have to worry about insurance costs and liability issues, so most photographers will stick to taking pictures from the ground. However, there is an entirely new way to take pictures that can potentially earn you a commission.

In the way they capture light, drones look very similar to video cameras. You can create incredible photos with the same technology.

Companies are making huge strides towards creating high-quality photos taken from the sky. We've already talked about DJI and GoPro. We're seeing more companies in the space.

These cameras are not only great for aerial photography, but they also work well on the ground. All of the major manufacturers are investing heavily in developing their imaging technologies.

This means you can eventually buy a drone which shoots 4K videos, and takes amazing photographs. This may be happening already. DJI is one of the companies that has started to release higher-resolution Phantom series drones.

DJI just released the Inspire 2 camera, which has a 12-megapixel sensor and can capture images at 5120 x 35656 pixels. You can also shoot 8-bit RAW files at 30 frames/second if you wish.

So yes, you can make money off of drone photos.

How To

How can I improve the quality of my drone photos?

The drone photo is a fantastic way to capture incredible images. It can even be better than any photo you take with a camera when done properly.

But there are ways to improve the quality of your images. One way is to make sure you're using the right settings for each model.

There are many apps and tools available that will help you to edit your photos once they have been taken. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is one example. It allows you to import multiple files and then adjust each shot individually.

You can also crop your image and make it more interesting. This includes changing the lighting and contrast, as well as removing any unwanted objects.

Snapseed is another option that allows basic editing such as cropping, brightness adjustment, and color correction.

The most important aspect of post-processing, however, is ensuring that your final product looks professional.

This means you must know how to use your camera correctly, and how to position yourselves properly.

Also, ensure that you select the correct settings for your lens. For example, if you're shooting landscapes, choose a longer focal length (such as 200mm), while if you're shooting close-ups, go for a shorter focal length (such as 50mm).

Learn how to shoot RAW format, which gives you more control over the final image.

Once you master these techniques, you will be able to create stunning drone photos that will impress everyone.
