There's Something in the Water in Amherstburg.


The Canadian Coast Guard vessel Matthew was originally built by Versatile Pacific Shipyard in North Vancouver and went into service in 1990.

She was primarily used as a scientific research and survey vessel.

When the vessel was decommissioned in 2016, she was renamed two thousand and fifteen dash zero three and put up for auction.

She had been put up for bid at least a half dozen times starting with a minimum bid of one point nine million dollars in September of 2016.

The opening bid was then reduced to one point seven five million and then to one million in October of 2017.

During the last tender, there was a million dollar minimum bid requirement, but it also stated that if no bids were received, that lesser amounts would be considered.

In 2019, the ship was sold to a numbered company in Goose Bay, Labrador and renamed Miss M J.

In drydock, she was re-certified by Lloyds Registry.

The vessel was then towed to Sydney Nova Scotia for a refit before further sale.

McKeil Marine's tug Ecosse brought Miss M J to her new owner in Amherstburg Ontario.

She is captured here passing the Canadian Coast Guard Station Amherstburg on the final leg of her journey.

Docked in silence as she passes by the Amherstburg station are the Canadian Coast Guard vessels Caribou Isle and the Cape Dundas.

Heading upstream in the Amherstburg channel, Miss M J also passes Boblo Island one final time.

McKeil Marine's tug Ecosse had the honour of bringing her to her final destination.

As they approached her new dock, vessels from Jones Marine Service also joined in to assist .

The entire trip was approximately twelve hundred nautical miles.

With many anxiously awaiting her arrival, the tug Ecosse slowly maneuvers the retired Coast Guard vessel towards the dock.

There are plans underway on making this unique vessel a combination Air BnB as well as a floating restaurant and event centre while she is permanently moored at the Amherstburg Yacht Club.

Kudos to the new owner on their investment in this huge endeavour and we wish Mr. Jones all the luck in making this a regional attraction.
