And first up this week, DJI has finally, officially, pulled the wraps off the Mavic 4 Pro, and boy, the specs are something else! This drone was probably the most leaked DJI product ever, but now we have the confirmed details. The star of the show is the main camera: a 4/3 CMOS Hasselblad sensor, now boasting 100 megapixels. That’s right, 100MP! It’s part of a triple-camera system with focal lengths of 28mm, 70mm, and 168mm, giving you incredible versatility. The main camera also supports Hasselblad Natural Color Solution and has a dynamic aperture from f/2.0 to f/11.
Next up, some important news for enterprise operators of the Matrice 4. AVSS, that’s Aerial Vehicle Safety Solutions, has successfully completed the ASTM F3322-24a compliance testing for their PRS-M4S parachute system. This system is designed specifically for the DJI Matrice 4 Series. What this means for operators is that later this month, the PRS-M4S is expected to be listed on the FAA’s Declaration of Compliance list for Category 2 flight over people operations. The system itself includes an Automatic Triggering System (ATS) and a Manual Triggering Device (MTD). It also has an internal battery that can be topped up by the drone for unlimited flight time, and it all comes in a rugged Nanuk case. The MSRP is $1,700 USD, and AVSS is taking new orders now, with deliveries expected to start in June 2025. For U.S. customers, AVSS notes the product is CUSMA-compliant and currently tariff-exempt, but tariff policies can change. This is a critical step for enterprise users of the Matrice 4 series looking to conduct more complex operations safely and legally.
And in our third story this week, public safety drone use continues to advance, which is fantastic to see. Over 260 public safety professionals from across the U.S. gathered in Ogden, Utah, for a weeklong drone training event. This event started on May 5th and was hosted by the Weber County Sheriff’s Office and the Law Enforcement Drone Association, or LEDA.
And finally, a real-world drones-for-good story, though it’s a serious one, out of New Mexico. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office recently released drone and body camera footage from an incident that occurred back in February. It involved two young brothers, ages 7 and 9, who were reportedly handling a loaded gun. In this incredibly tense situation, deputies deployed a drone, which provided a critical vantage point.
The drone footage was instrumental. It helped deputies communicate with the boys and eventually use a non-lethal round to distract them. This allowed officers to move in and safely secure the weapon and the children. Sheriff
