Owner of viral red house thinks this is why it survived Maui wildfires

The owner of a red-roofed house in Maui that went viral for remaining untouched by the historic wildfires has explained the small, unexpected details that she thinks helped it survive in a neighborhood otherwise reduced to ash.

Stunning aerial images of the unscathed property went viral last week — while also sparking bonkers conspiracies that the local devastation was a targeted laser attack from space.

However, owner Dora Atwater Millikin put it down to a handful of routine changes during a recent renovation — none of which were aimed at surviving such a disaster.

“It’s a 100% wood house so it’s not like we fireproofed it or anything,” the landscape painter told the Los Angeles Times.

Atwater Millikin said that she and her husband, Dudley, a retired portfolio manager, did not have wildfires in mind when they renovated the 100-year-old former bookkeeper’s house that they’ve owned for three years.

Is it OK to fly a drone at night?

Drones have become more and more popular. Drones not only provide incredible aerial shots of homes and businesses but also allow for the delivery of goods and surveillance of large areas. However, drones are still subject to very few regulations. Some states in America have banned them altogether, while others have restricted where they may operate.

While flying drones during daylight hours are relatively safe, there are still risks involved when operating them at night. Your safety and that of other pilots may be endangered if you fly your drone at night. Because it is hard to spot hazards and obstacles, mistakes made by pilots could cause an accident.

Drones are becoming increasingly popular; therefore, we must learn how to operate them safely. There are currently two main types of drones: fixed-wing and rotary-wing. Fixed-wing drones can be controlled more easily than rotary wing models. A fixed-wing drone usually has four propellers, while a rotary-wing model only has one.

To avoid accidents, you should familiarize yourself with the local laws concerning drone usage. It is also important that you ensure that your drone is within your direct line of sight at all time. Also, make sure that your drone has lights. This will make it easier for you spot potentially dangerous objects. Your camera lens should be protected against any scratches if you plan to take pictures. It is also a good idea to use protective goggles when flying your drone.

Drone flying at night poses several dangers. This includes collisions and damage to power lines, trees, or buildings. A drone could also become lost or fall from the skies. Therefore, you must keep your drone away from obstructions and stay close to the ground. Drones can also be affected by wind gusts or sudden weather changes. These factors could disrupt the drone's flight or cause it to crash into land.

Although drones are becoming increasingly popular, they come with potential health risks. These drones can emit noises that can cause hearing loss and headaches. A drone's vibrations can cause physical and emotional damage. Flying drones without a license can result in fines and legal action.

This guideline will help prevent any accidents. You must keep your drone within your direct line of sight when flying it. Flying near airports? Be sure to follow any airport regulations. Flying your drone over water increases the risk of a collision.

How do I get started with drone photography?

There are many ways to get started with drone photography. First, you can buy a pre-made drone kit. This will include everything you need to get started. They vary in price from $200 to $500 depending upon the model.

The other option is to build your drone. Even though this can be difficult, it is still possible to build a drone that will take decent photos or videos.

For those who want to try building their drone, we recommend starting with a quadcopter. Quadcopters have four propellers (or rotors) as opposed to two like traditional helicopters.

It is much easier to assemble and maintain a quadcopter than a helicopter. It is also more affordable to buy and easier for you to transport.

First, you need to pick the right parts. You will need props, motors, batteries controllers and controllers. You should choose the right size and weight.

Next, you will need to choose which type of controller you want. Many different types are available, such as joysticks, touch screens, and remote controls. A built-in camera is an option, as you don’t need to attach a separate device. We recommend buying one.

After you've selected the right parts, you can begin to assemble the drone. Pre-assembled kits are recommended to make it easier. You can build your drone on your own by following these steps.

Step 1: Attach your battery pack

To start building your quadcopter you'll first need to connect it to the motor. Remove the cover plate on the bottom side of the battery. Next, slide your battery into place.

Step 2: Connect the motors

Next, install the motors into the correct slots. Each motor must be placed in the appropriate slot. Make sure the motors are facing forward when installing them.

Step 3: Install your propeller

Attach the propellers to your frame. Make sure they are at the same distance apart.

Now you are ready to test your drone. If the engine does not move, ensure that the propellers are facing forward. You should also make sure there is no obstruction between the propellers.

Can you make money off of drone photography?

Photographers trying to make a living from drones face the greatest problem: there aren’t many products available that can solve the problems of flying them. A lack of quality equipment and software makes the experience enjoyable.

Photographers also need to consider liability and insurance. Many photographers will choose to shoot from the ground. This is a completely new way to capture images, and you might get paid for it.

Drones work in the same way that video cameras do by capturing light. Why not make amazing photos with the same technology?

Companies are making huge strides towards creating high-quality photos taken from the sky. We've already spoken about DJI, GoPro. We are starting to see more companies entering the space.

These cameras can be used for aerial photography but are also very useful on the ground. All the major manufacturers are investing heavily to develop their imaging technologies.

You'll soon be able buy a drone capable of taking incredible photos and 4K video. We might already be witnessing this happening. DJI, for example, has released higher-resolution versions their Phantom series of drones.

DJI recently launched the Inspire 2, a 12-megapixel camera capable of taking photos at 5120x3456 pixels. If you prefer to shoot in RAW format you can capture 8-bit files at 30 frames a second.

Yes, drone photos can be a great way to make some extra cash.

Is there a good place to take photos from a drone?

Drones have been a very useful tool in capturing stunning shots of nature. Whether you want close-up shots of animals like birds and butterflies or to capture beautiful scenery, drones are ideal.

Drones are best used in mountains, deserts and other locations such as beaches, cities, oceans, rivers, and lakes. Many drone enthusiasts capture stunning views of their local areas and other attractions.

Which drone is best for beginners?

A drone that doesn't require special skills to fly is the best for beginners. These drones are equipped with an "FPV" camera which allows the user to control the drone remotely via a smartphone app.

Some quadcopters are specifically made for aerial photography. If you are planning to explore more advanced features such as autonomous flight mode, obstacle avoidance, etc., you might opt for a multirotor model.

The drones come in two price categories: low-cost ones under $100 and high-end ones over $300.

The cheapest models tend to have a limited range, battery life, and flight time. The more expensive models feature greater performance and longer flight durations.

As they are simpler to use and handle, beginners tend to choose the cheapest options. If you intend to fly your drone for hours, however, you might consider buying a more expensive model.
